Why get a PPSR Check?

When buying a used car from a private seller rather than a licensed dealer, it’s important to check the car’s PPSR history.

Unlike car dealers, private sellers are not required to disclose whether the vehicle has any outstanding finance secured against it. If the car is tied to an unpaid loan and the previous owner defaults, the lender may repossess the vehicle. This could leave you without the car and out of pocket for the money you spent.

Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR)

The PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) is an Australian Government resource that helps protect consumers purchasing personal property, including cars. By searching the register, you can check whether a second-hand car has any outstanding finance or other relevant details.

While some providers charge up to $35 for a PPSR check (also known as a VIN search), MyAuto offers this service to you free of charge.

What you can check

Financing Owing
If you purchase a car that is still secured against an outstanding loan and the previous owner defaults on repayments, the lender may repossess the vehicle, leaving you without the car and out of pocket for your purchase.

Reported as Stolen
Although you cannot be penalised for unknowingly buying a stolen car, it may be seized and returned to its rightful owner or their insurer or finance company, leaving you without the vehicle.

Has Been Written Off
Some repairable write-offs are repaired, inspected, re-registered, and resold. However, these repairs may be of substandard quality, posing safety risks for future use.

Other Checks

While a PPSR search certificate provides valuable information about the car you’re buying, it’s important to perform additional checks, including:

Pre-Purchase Inspection: Hire an independent mechanic to inspect the vehicle. They can verify the car’s identity by confirming the VIN or chassis number has not been tampered with.
Service History: Request the service manual from the previous owner to ensure the odometer readings are consistent and accurate.
Modifications: Confirm that any modifications to the vehicle comply with legal requirements.
