How to tell if your car has a clutch problem

At its core, your car’s clutch is a relatively simple mechanism that plays a crucial role in engaging and disengaging the drive from the engine to the transmission. Most clutches consist of three main components: the flywheel (connected directly to the engine), the friction disc (linked to the transmission), and the pressure plate (which connects the other two).

When you press the clutch pedal, springs and levers push the pressure plate away from the friction disc, allowing you to smoothly change gears without damaging your transmission.

Here’s how to identify if your clutch might be causing trouble.

Signs of a bad clutch

Recognising clutch problems early can save you from costly repairs. Pay attention to the following signs:

  • Pedal feedback: If the clutch pedal feels spongy, sticks, vibrates, or doesn’t engage properly, it may indicate a problem.
  • Unusual noises: A grumbling or grinding sound when using the clutch could mean damage.
  • Burnt smell: A burnt-toast-like smell while driving often points to a stressed friction plate, similar to overheated brake pads.
  • Shifting issues: Difficulty changing gears, hard acceleration with poor vehicle response, or sudden losses in power while driving are all red flags.

How long should a clutch last?

On average, a clutch lasts between 70,000 km and 160,000 km, but this varies depending on how you drive.

  • Highway driving: Minimal gear changes and lighter loads can extend clutch life.
  • City driving or heavy loads: Stop-start traffic or towing can wear out a clutch more quickly.

Can you drive with a broken clutch?

Technically, yes, but it’s not recommended. In an emergency, you can start the car in first gear by releasing the handbrake and gently starting the engine. Once rolling, shifting gears is possible by carefully matching engine revs and nudging the gearstick into position without using the clutch. However, this is a temporary fix—get the issue addressed as soon as possible.

Should you replace the flywheel when replacing the clutch?

While not always necessary, replacing or machining the flywheel when installing a new clutch is a good idea. A damaged or uneven flywheel can lead to vibrations, difficulty shifting, and uneven wear on the clutch. Since the flywheel is already accessible during clutch replacement, adding this step won’t significantly increase labour costs.

Keep your car running smoothly

Maintaining a healthy clutch is essential for a smooth driving experience. If you notice any of the signs mentioned above, it’s best to consult a mechanic sooner rather than later. Regular inspections and addressing issues promptly will save you time, money, and stress in the long run.
